Mount Vernon drops pet licensing in favor of required microchipping; rabies shots still mandatory

A Mount Vernon staff member said the change aims to improve reunification of lost pets with owners and encouraged residents to watch MVPD’s Facebook page for reduced-cost or free microchipping events. The staff member also reminded listeners that pets are still required to be up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
The city did not provide the effective date for the licensing change, any enforcement details or information about whether microchip registry fees will be covered or subsidized.
