Board reallocates trailer budget, authorizes up to $15,000 in repairs and seeks used spotter trucks

Koochiching County staff told the board March 10 that shorter hauling distances to the Saint Louis County Regional Landfill have reduced wear on the county’s municipal solid-waste (MSW) trailers and that refurbishing existing trailers could be more cost-effective than buying a new one.
Staff provided an inventory and condition report and said local fabricator Dan Benedix of ICF Metal Fabrication and Welding could repair the worst trailer for about $15,000. “He has done a great job and has said he could probably repair our worst trailer for around $15,000,” staff reported. The board authorized repairs not to exceed $15,000 and agreed to reallocate the $125,000 previously budgeted for a new trailer toward repairs and the purchase of used spotter trucks.
Staff also asked for authority to solicit prices for two used transfer-station spotter trucks and return to the board with recommended purchases. The board authorized the solicitation and asked staff to bring back bids for final approval.
Board members said they supported a conservative approach that extends the life of current equipment while preserving budget flexibility for future replacement if needed. The motions carried during the meeting.
