"This escalator... is essential for our international process. It is a single point of failure," Pena said, adding that the equipment has exceeded its life expectancy.
Staff recommended awarding the work to Shimbwick Elevator under a contract not to exceed the packet's budgeted amount; the contract includes labor and materials. Commissioners moved and seconded the action and the measure passed unanimously on a voice vote.
Airport staff said the modernization work is necessary to maintain international processing capacity and avoid operational disruptions while broader terminal renewal projects continue.
The contract moves forward with funding described as within the current budget; staff will return with any additional implementation details as work is scheduled.
