Indio staff schedules Desi mural unveiling, updates several memorial and restoration projects

Desi Memorial: Staff announced a mural unveiling on Monday, March 16 at 10:00 a.m. Family members, Loma Linda representatives and the muralist will attend; staff said AR signage will be installed and invited commissioners and the public to the ceremony.
Avenue 45 and Shadow Walk: The Avenue 45 mural unveiling was well attended with community dancers and school groups; staff thanked the artist and community for participation. The Jackson Street shade structure (the ‘‘shadow walk’’) has been completed as a public-works project; staff said public works purchased spare poles for maintenance and that the commission may assume maintenance responsibility in two to three years if needed.
Memorial projects and conservation: Staff said coordination with public works and contractors is under way to complete the 9/11 memorial within the next one to two months, pending irrigation, electrical and concrete work. Veterans Day memorial design work is proceeding with marketing staff and contractors and staff aims for an unveiling on Veterans Day. Regarding the Native American mural on Indio Boulevard, staff said a protective coat was applied last year and that conservation of the main figure has been added to the 2026 conservation plan pending conservator estimates and budgeting.
Staff closed by inviting commissioners to planned events and saying detailed agendas will be circulated for unveilings and ceremonies.
