The mayor called on the San Marcos community to "reflect on the privilege of American citizenship and the enduring strength of our Constitution."
A committee member noted a representative of the Sons of the American Revolution was present, identified as Joe Cox, and invited residents to a Bells Across America observance the following day at the downtown Methodist Church. The committee member said bells would ring at 4:00 p.m. Eastern (3:00 p.m. local) to coincide with the anniversary timing used nationwide.
The proclamation language and the event invitation were presented as part of the meeting's ceremonial items; the mayor and attendees posed for photos after the reading.
