Council directs staff to seek extension and coordinate with Hays County on possible purchase of old Southside School site

Following an executive session that included real‑property negotiations, the San Marcos City Council on Sept. 2 directed staff to pursue an extension from the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District and to coordinate a joint offer with Hays County for the old Southside School property.
Mayor and council members voted to ask staff to request an extension of the district’s deadline beyond Sept. 8, 2025, and to prepare a joint proposal — excluding Lot 2 — with a proposed city and county contribution of up to $600,000 each. Any purchase would be subject to standard due diligence, including environmental assessments.
The motion passed in open session after the executive session and the city said it will work with county counterparts to draft an offer once the extension request is filed. Councilmember recusal was noted on the record where appropriate.
Next steps: City and county staff will coordinate on a joint proposal and pursue an extension from the school district. Any formal purchase agreement would be conditional on due diligence results and will return to council for authorization.
