Bonita Unified honors student athletes and staff, hears community-science presentation

The Bonita Unified School District Board of Education recognized student achievements across the district, honored staff and volunteers, and heard a community-science presentation from the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District.
Student representatives reported spring highlights: Brianna Juarez of Bonita High School said the choir performed at Carnegie Hall and the band traveled to New Orleans; she also noted that 10 student athletes signed letters of intent to play at the collegiate level and reminded the board that state testing begins this week. "Our students and staff have been hard at work, and this spring has been nothing short of amazing," Juarez said.
The board recognized athletic champions, including Bonita High School wrestler Tristan Fernandez for multiple league and CIF championships and strong academic performance. San Dimas High School's Aubrielle Baez was recognized for winning a CIF girls' wrestling title; the San Dimas girls' water polo team was also honored for winning the CIF Southern Section championship.
District staff awards included the certificated employee of the year, the classified employee of the year (Mary Udrea), and the management employee of the year (Melissa Stone). The board announced an employee and retiree celebration scheduled for April 23 at Mountain Meadows Golf Course.
Representatives from the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District introduced Operation Mosquito GRID ("Growth Reduction, Increased Detection"), a free middle-school community-science program in which students remove mosquito habitat around homes and conduct surveillance for invasive Aedes mosquitoes. A district representative thanked Leslie Alaseda (teacher) for facilitating the program at Lone Hill Middle School and encouraged other Bonita Unified K'8 teachers to participate in the fall.
Board members also used their reports to highlight enrollment for TK and kindergarten, upcoming events (teacher appreciation week, Gold Rush fourth-grade program at Allen Avenue, local sports and arts events), and community partnerships (a walk-through of the San Dimas pool facility with local elected officials). The board closed the meeting with announcements about the next regular meeting on May 7, 2025.
