Rowland Unified names Maria Thompson HR director; superintendent reports tentative bargaining package

The Rowland Unified board on Feb. 5 introduced Maria Thompson as the district’s new director of human resources and received a superintendent update on the recent bargaining cycle.
Superintendent Alex Flores formally introduced Thompson and asked her to address the board. Thompson thanked the board and described her career in public education and commitment to relationship-building. “I’m truly honored and grateful to join the Rowland Unified team,” she said.
Flores thanked the bargaining teams representing ARE, CSEA and ARA and said the district had concluded the negotiation cycle, with ratification by CSEA still pending. He described the tentative terms on the record: “We’re able to offer a 2 and a half percent ongoing increase, a 2 percent one-time payment, and a $4,000 increase to our cap,” Flores said. He also expressed appreciation for payroll and fiscal staff who moved the tentative CSEA item to a study-session agenda to speed compensation changes if ratified.
Board members welcomed Thompson and praised the district’s progress in bargaining discussions; trustees emphasized continued collaboration with labor partners and staff to maintain student-focused services.
