Rowland Unified spotlights STARS transition program and student honors at board meeting

Students and staff from the STARS transition program presented a program overview and vocational activities; the board also recognized a student selected for the SCSBOA All-Southern Honor Band and four QuestBridge scholars from Nogales High School.
At the Feb. 5 Rowland Unified board meeting, the district highlighted student achievements and a transition program serving students with moderate-to-severe disabilities.
The STARS transition program delivered a report describing its focus on vocational skills, independent living and community-based instruction for students ages 18–21. Presenters listed staff and daily schedules and described on-campus enterprises and community work sites — including partnerships with Costco and local hotels — that provide hands-on job training. A STARS staff member told the board the program runs three classes of eight to 10 students each, and students train in small groups to meet individualized IEP goals.
Board members congratulated Alvarado Intermediate seventh-grade clarinetist Ashton Chiu on selection to the 2026 SCSBOA All-Southern Honor Band and praised Nogales High School for securing four QuestBridge National College Match scholarships. The board noted the colleges named by trustees included Northwestern, Wellesley, Amherst and Bowdoin.
Trustees and the superintendent thanked students and staff for the presentations and spotlighted upcoming student events, including performances, athletic playoff contests and the spring musical.
