Council approves Crossland GMP for AC Kaplinger ballfield renovation; demolition expected soon

The Edmond City Council on Aug. 12 approved a contract amendment with Crossland Inc., the construction manager-at-risk for phase 1 of the AC Kaplinger Ballfield Complex renovation, allowing demolition and earthwork to begin.
Brad Rainey, the city's parks and recreation director, told council staff had received 100% design documents and that the construction budget for the broader project was cited at $16,100,000 with roughly $1,300,000 for design and a total estimated project budget near $17.5 million. Rainey said the city split early work into demolition and earthwork so those portions could be bid and started sooner; those two elements came in under the budgeted estimate and, he said, "shortly after this meeting, probably a couple weeks, we will start to see demolition take place."
Rationale and schedule: Rainey said the renovation will reduce the number of fields, add parking, replace playgrounds and restrooms, add synthetic turf in some areas, and improve sidewalks and shade. A tentative ceremonial groundbreaking is planned for Sept. 10; staff expects to bring additional bid results and final contract packages back to council in October.
Vote and motion: Council made and seconded a motion to approve the contract amendment; the council voted to pass the item.
Next steps: Staff will finish its review of the 100% design, finalize a site plan, release remaining bid packages and begin demolition and earthwork as soon as the contracted work is mobilized.
