Mechanicsburg reports degritter construction under way at wastewater plant; grant funded majority of project

Mechanicsburg’s sanitary sewer superintendent told council on Nov. 18 that construction of a degritter at the wastewater treatment plant began Nov. 3 and that the equipment will remove materials that settle quickly, which should reduce wear on downstream equipment and lower long‑term maintenance costs.
Superintendent Huey said a grant awarded in 2022 funded the majority of the degritter project. No additional dollar amounts or schedule milestones beyond the Nov. 3 start date were provided during the meeting. Manager Jessie Novinger confirmed the Manager’s Report is up to date and available online.
Separately, Public Works Director Lehr said leaf collection is progressing well. When Councilman Bucher asked how residents may dispose of yard waste now that seasonal collection has concluded, Lehr said residents must purchase a compost pass to dispose of yard waste at borough facilities at this time.
The council approved a consent item Thursday that includes a $100 application fee and Resolution 20‑2025 to pursue a Local Share Account grant for a related ultraviolet‑light disinfection project at the wastewater plant.
