Committee hears updates on courtroom remodel, energy plant chiller and Highway Building 7 options

At its March 2 meeting the Minnehaha County Building Committee received a series of facilities updates, including a courtroom remodel, energy plant chiller replacement progress and planning options for Highway Department Building 7.
Jamie Gravett, Juvenile Detention Center Director (via Zoom), said a courtroom remodel would begin the morning of March 2, expected to take no more than two weeks, and that a May 3, 2021 target reuse date had been set; Facility Director Mark Kriens indicated the cost should remain under $5,000.
Kriens also reported on the Energy Plant chiller replacement: existing chillers were removed, new chillers were set in place, cooling towers were replaced, chilled-water piping and new pumps installed, and electrical work and controls were continuing.
Shannon Schultz, Assistant Highway Superintendent (via Zoom), described options for Building 7 — which currently occupies the site of the planned new Highway Facility — explaining the county must decide whether to keep and relocate the building, sell it, or identify temporary warm storage options for trucks until the new facility is ready.
Committee Member Heiberger suggested discussing a remodel of the Public Defender’s Office basement at the next Building Committee meeting. The meeting adjourned on a motion by Heiberger, seconded by Bender, with seven ayes.
