Residents ask Washington County commissioners to take over and maintain Reno Road area streets

Several residents asked the Washington County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 6 to take over and maintain neighborhood roads off Reno Road.
Jeanette Price, Doris Dixon, Pam Pittman and James Chesson described deteriorating conditions on their streets and asked the county to assume maintenance. Commissioner Riddick confirmed the roads are in the same area. Chair D. Cole Phelps asked County Manager/County Attorney Curtis Potter to respond.
Potter said the relevant roads were once covered by a subdivision ordinance that has since been repealed and that North Carolina law generally prohibits counties from taking over state roads. He told residents the county staff can help facilitate discussions with the state and asked them to give contact information to Ms. Adams in the County Manager's office and to complete SR1 forms; Potter said residents should expect contact from the county within 30 days.
The board did not take formal action on Jan. 6; staff will review plats and follow up with the residents who provided contact information.
