Summary
Sue Mauro told the council that Centennial Plaza had repairs to the cupola, parking improvements, and that recent events (Halloween and the Christmas tree lighting) drew heavy foot traffic and made heavy use of newly installed crosswalk safety lights.
NEWPORT — At its Jan. 20 meeting, the Newport City Council heard an update on Centennial Plaza from community presenter Sue Mauro, who described recent repairs, event activity and safety improvements.
Mauro reported that the cupola on the gazebo was repaired and painted last year, the parking lot was seal‑coated last summer, and the local public utility district assists the city with changing the flag flown above the gazebo. She credited the Chamber and the local museum for organizing the Christmas tree lighting and said the Halloween event drew several hundred trick‑or‑treaters who used the gazebo crossing area.
Mauro noted the new safety crosswalk lights were heavily used during both events and praised the ongoing maintenance performed by volunteer gardeners Candi Stipe and Dorothy Bernard. She said foot traffic across the plaza increased while the Chamber Visitor Center was closed for several months.
The council did not take a vote on plaza maintenance at the meeting but directed Clerk/Treasurer Nickole North to prepare a resolution clarifying annual reimbursement payments to the Pend Oreille County Historical Society after Mauro shared historical documentation related to the matter. No funding changes or specific new expenditures for the plaza were approved at the session.
The council adjourned at 6:26 PM.
