County given $31M guaranteed maximum price for new courts building; sheriff outlines SRO coverage plans

Vice Mayor Bryan McCarter told the Sevier County Budget Committee on May 4 that the architect for the proposed new courts building supplied a guaranteed maximum price of approximately $31 million, a figure McCarter said is valid through May 31. Brooke Huffaker, Assistant County Mayor and Senior Director of Finance & Administration, said the all-in cost is about $32 million and that the County has paid roughly $1 million to date.
McCarter indicated there are about $1 million in potential deductions under review by the Mayor’s Office and Facilities. The committee did not vote on the courts building at this meeting; the price and timing were presented as an update during budget planning.
On school safety, Commissioner Warren Hurst asked Sheriff Michael Hodges to address school resource officer (SRO) coverage. Hodges said the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office plans to provide an SRO at the Trula Lawson Center next school year if the Sevierville Police Department cannot, and that SCSO is considering applying for a state SRO grant. He added SCSO expects to have an SRO in four city-limit schools next year. When asked where SRO funding comes from, Hodges and Director Huffaker said it is a combination of state funds and the Sevier County Board of Education budget.
The committee did not take a formal action on the courts building price or on SRO funding during this meeting; both items were presented as budget updates.
