VDOT details road repairs and a yearlong detour for a structurally compromised bridge in King and Queen County

Ron Peaks of the Virginia Department of Transportation updated the King and Queen County Board of Supervisors on active and upcoming roadwork April 10.

Peaks listed current work including rural rustic paving on Holmestown Road and asphalt paving on Route 621. He said an emergency closure was put in place for a bridge on Route 628 (Spring Cottage Road) because of structural issues; the detour associated with that closure could remain in place for up to a year. Peaks said the department is pursuing an engineering request for a signage, signal and incident review at the Route 360/Route 14 intersection at St. Stephens Church and has scheduled slope repairs, shoulder work and cross pipe repairs near Corbin Mill Pond. Routine maintenance such as ditching, boom-axing, pothole patching, sign repair and gravel-road maintenance will continue countywide.

Supervisors and attendees followed with localized concerns: Sherrin Alsop pointed to significant pavement damage and potholes at the Rt. 721 roundabout and on Indian Neck Road; Ms. Morris asked about rippled pavement on Rt. 14 and requested gravel on Mount Olive Bottom Road; Mr. Burns asked why orange safety barrels remained at the Taylorsville/York River Road intersection after the underlying safety matter had been addressed. Alsop also raised the possibility of installing litter signs along county roads where trash has become an issue.

Peaks and the Board did not announce additional funding commitments during the meeting; the VDOT update listed specific upcoming projects including Rt. 661 asphalt patching, Rt. 614 pipe replacement and Rt. 617 ditching, and noted that some detours and repairs could be long-term depending on structural findings.
