The Trussville City Council voted 3–1 on Jan. 27 to declare a public-safety emergency at the Sports Complex and authorize emergency measures to guide pedestrians to designated crosspoints.
Councilor Ben Horton introduced the resolution, recounting an incident last year in which a young girl was struck by a moving vehicle while attempting to cross Pumphouse Road between the baseball fields and the parking lot. Horton said the change is intended to reduce jaywalking at points of heavy foot and vehicle traffic during baseball and softball seasons.
Councilor Kimberly Farr seconded the motion; the council approved Resolution No. 2026-11. Councilor Jim Miller cast the lone dissenting vote. The motion authorizes emergency action pursuant to the State Public Works Law to implement pedestrian-control measures at the complex.
The resolution does not specify the exact engineering changes or timeline; the council authorized staff to proceed with the emergency action. Mayor Ben Short and Public Works Director Justin Ferguson were noted as working with outside partners on related traffic and striping projects elsewhere in the city.
