Planning commission backs Verizon tower in Red Oak, citing improved service

The Charlotte County Planning Commission recommended approval June 26 of a conditional use permit for a Verizon Wireless telecommunications tower to be located on Tax Parcel 98-A-56 on the east side of Barnesville Highway in Red Oak.
Staff presented project details, the network map, applicable zoning and 2232 comprehensive-plan requirements and recommended conditions. Lisa Murphy, representing Verizon Wireless, told the commission the site was selected to address coverage needs, allow space for additional carriers and to serve a transportation corridor.
Nearby residents spoke in opposition during the public hearing. Dennis Weston of Barnesville Highway expressed concerns about the tower’s visual impact and the potential for decreased property values. Randall Suslick of Robertson Street said much of his property lies in a conservation easement and worried about altered viewsheds. Wayne Crump of Oak Grove Road raised concerns about impacts to historic-property views.
Commissioners discussed equipment placement, coverage needs and potential tax revenue. In introducing the commission’s formal finding, Commissioner Belinda Strom moved to find The Towers LLC’s conditional use permit application “substantially in accord with the Charlotte County Comprehensive Plan,” citing that “the project will enhance communication in the Red Oak community and along an important transportation corridor,” that the use supports the county goal of providing adequate communications, and that the nature of the use does not negatively impact the rural character of the community. The motion carried with all members present voting yes.
Curtis Morton then moved to recommend approval of The Towers LLC’s conditional use permit as presented, with the conditions recommended by staff. That motion also passed on a roll-call vote with all members present voting yes.
The commission’s recommendation will be forwarded for any subsequent steps required by county procedure.
