Steele County awards County Road 23 West contract, approves preliminary engineering for County Road 7 bridge

The road bid award was made by Commissioner Richard Strand and seconded by Commissioner Russell Walcker; the board voted in roll call with Walcker, Strand, Johnson and Tuite voting yes and Commissioner Randy Richards abstaining. The motion included waiving a technicality in the bid tabulation. Commissioner Randy Richards moved (seconded by Commissioner Strand) separately to approve and sign a preliminary engineering contract with Interstate Engineering for the bridge over the Middle Branch of the Goose River on County Road #7 (BRO-0046(020) PNC 20923); that motion passed unanimously.
Why it matters: the County Road 23 West contract authorizes construction work on a primary county route; the County Road #7 bridge is a Federal Aid bridge project and the commission approved the preliminary engineering step needed to pursue that work.
Interstate Engineering’s Mike Bassingthwaite updated the board on a separate correspondence concerning a ‘‘code three’’ bridge and noted that Reed Oien will respond to a notice on bridge 118.4. Bassingthwaite said he will present an engineering contract for the upcoming road project at the May meeting and will provide an estimate to repair rail damage to a bridge on County Road 11.
The board was told the Federal Aid bridge project is estimated at $48,000; that figure does not include preliminary engineering services. The commission did not set construction dates at the meeting; Bassingthwaite is expected to return with a formal engineering contract and cost details at the May meeting.
Next steps: Interstate Engineering will present a project engineering contract at the May meeting and provide the estimate for bridge‑rail repairs; the County will proceed with contracting paperwork for County Road 23 West with Central Specialties per the awarded bids.
