Hudson County advances $37.2M bond ordinance for road and bridge work amid questions about Route 7 project inclusion

Hudson County commissioners read a bond ordinance (I-1) on Feb. 11 that would appropriate $37,199,047 for 2025 road and bridge improvements and authorize borrowing of approximately $10.56 million to finance part of the program.
Commissioner William O'Dea and Commissioner Albert Cifelli pressed county staff for details about the Route 7 widening and related projects, noting that earlier widening work (near the Clay Street bridge) used existing right-of-way obtained from private property and that additional schematics would be useful for review. Consultant Tom Malavasi said certain segments—near Stewart's/Dunkin' Donuts and the Car Wash—are within County right-of-way and that crews planned to avoid taking additional private land.
O'Dea also raised inclusion and contracting questions: the county is participating in committees to encourage minority- and women-owned business participation on large state and federal projects and he urged outreach to ensure local firms share in workforce and contracting opportunities on major corridor improvements.
The agenda also included separate resolutions to support improvements to the Baldwin Avenue Bridge over the Passaic and Harimus Branch and a Fair-and-Open contract for bridge work. Commissioners asked staff to share concept sketches and project details with the Board before implementation steps.
