Chattahoochee County to pass GFL trash rate increase to residents; managers remind public of FLOST voting dates

County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners at an Oct. 27 work session that the county’s waste-hauler, GFL, raised residential pickup rates by $2 and increased the cost of an extra container to $14 per month. Weaver said the county will pass the cost through to residents on the January water bill and that the county will absorb one month before the passthrough begins.
Weaver provided other operational updates: early voting for the FLOST election was underway, TextMyGov signage is being used to help residents report work orders and sign up for alerts, and the county denied a Tapt grant application but is pursuing other options. He also reported that Public Works has been grading Patterson Road and making repairs on Manta and Gordy Mill roads, and that recent upgrades were made after lightning strikes affected well No. 3. The county’s 2022 financial audit is complete and the 2023 audit work is expected to start soon.
On scheduling and permitting, Mordie Askew said the Riverbend fishing-dock project is awaiting U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approval; once permits are secured, the same contractor will handle dredging and dock construction. Several items discussed at the work session were slated for the Nov. 4 regular meeting agenda, including ending the Ft. Benning stray facility contract, a library-board appointment (Teresa Williams), pursuing an Economic Development Agency sewer grant, and a $30,000 public-works truck purchase using SPLOST funds.
"Correct, the reason for the rate increase is due to the landfill tipping fees for them have doubled," County Manager Thomas Weaver said, adding that the county would still have one of the lower rates in the region and that the county planned to pass the increase through to residents beginning with the January water bills.
