The Unified Government of Cusseta–Chattahoochee County reported Dec. 2 that it was awarded a SEID grant described in the minutes as a $600,000 award to begin a trail coming from Fort Benning.
County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners that staff received the grant notification that morning and must confirm the county’s continued interest before federal/state administrators proceed with planning. Weaver said SEID grants tend to move slowly but called the award a "huge deal" for the county.
At the Dec. 22 work session, Weaver told commissioners the next step is to select an engineer from a short list included in the packet. He said one previously proposed alignment from West Railroad to the recreation center is unlikely to work and that staff is instead pursuing a sidewalk linking the library to the recreation center that can be incorporated into the trail effort.
Weaver advised commissioners that staff would present engineer procurement results and recommend a firm under the county’s scoring process at an upcoming meeting. He also cautioned that grant projects require staged approvals and that schedules depend on the grant program’s administrative process.
The minutes and packet list the grant award amount and identify engineering firms under consideration; the commission did not take a formal vote on engineer selection at the Dec. 2 meeting.
