Cusseta–Chattahoochee commissioners hear staff updates on grants, roads, recycling and planning

County staff briefed the commission at a June 23 work session on grant submissions, road projects, recycling operations and other operational matters ahead of the July 1 meeting.
Thomas Weaver, the county manager, told commissioners the county is reapplying for a sewer grant and a 'rails for trails' walking‑trail grant and expected to have bids for Friendship Road late in July with an award possible at the August meeting. Weaver said audits continue to progress and that the comprehensive‑plan update begins with a public meeting on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Chris Dunn, introduced as with the Georgia Forestry Commission, said he started working with the county in December, will deliver the annual forestry report soon, and described resources Forestry can provide to support the county and local fire department during disasters.
Staff addressed community confusion about acceptable donations and C&D disposal at the county recycling site. Weaver said residents with an active county water account may bring household garbage and small amounts of C&D at no charge, while local businesses are charged ($35 per unit). He said staff will post clearer signage and that he will contact local charities such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army to explore donation pickup or collection options.
Other operational notes: a new animal control officer has been hired and water‑system maintenance included cleaning Tank 1 on June 17 with scheduling for Tank 2 under way; Columbus Water Works staff changes were also noted. The commission asked that several items be placed on the July 1 regular meeting agenda, including a FLOST sales‑tax resolution to appear on a future ballot, the appointment of Sheila Wilson to the Board of Tax Assessors, and a proclamation honoring longtime library employee Pam Burgamy.
No executive session was requested at the work session and the meeting adjourned with unanimous consent.
