Committee hears project updates: salt‑dome done, Richards Pit powered, multiple town bridges critical or closed

Marquette County Highway Department staff gave a series of project and operations updates at the Jan. 20 meeting.
Brian Trebiatowski, an agency official, told the committee the salt‑dome replacement project is complete after delays for overhead doors and electrical work; staff are processing reimbursement with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. At Richards Pit the line‑power transition was completed in late December and crews will begin maintenance as weather permits; material for 2026 production is on site with supplemental aggregate planned for 2027.
On the CTH E STP Rural project, Brian said design staff are resolving right‑of‑way needs with a landowner and the project is scheduled for the March 10 state letting; the contractor awarded the project will determine the construction schedule. Brian reported two ARIP applications were submitted: one for County Road A (State Highway 23 to County Road D, including County Road P) and one for the Town of Mecan for the Eagle Road 6‑20 structure closed in October. ARIP award announcements are anticipated in April.
A WTA consultant’s inspections found four town structures in critical condition: one on Eagle Road (Mecan) closed, one on Duck Creek Lane (Newton) initially posted at 5 tons then closed, another on Dakota Ave (Newton) posted at 5 tons, and one on Duck Creek Ave (Crystal Lake) posted at 20 tons. Brian said the remaining structures are eligible for replacement via the ARIP program.
The committee also received a facilities update: staff are working with Buildings and Grounds on carpet replacement estimates for the Highway office and a facility assessment of the Westfield Shop including insulation, floor drains, concrete repairs and potential fuel‑system upgrades for future capital planning. Equipment notes included relisting Truck #009 after it failed to meet reserve at auction and a delay to two quads ordered in 2024, now expected April–May 2026. Brian added that three CESA apprentices assist part‑time with welding and maintenance tasks.
ARIP award decisions and state letting results will determine next steps and schedules for the projects discussed.
