Duke presenters describe CARES Act program that delivered PPE, food and transport to regional residents

Dr. Johnson of the Duke University School of Medicine and David Riggins explained to the Henderson City Council on July 12 that, using CARES Act funding, Duke provided pandemic-related supports across several counties from September 2020 through March 30, 2021.
Riggins said the program distributed personal protective equipment, food boxes and transportation assistance and worked with community organizations including the Kerr-Tar Council of Governments, YMCA and GangFree to reach residents. He said the three components—food, transportation assistance and PPE—helped people quarantine safely and that roughly 88 staff were added to support program delivery.
Council Member Melissa Elliott emphasized the value of using community-based personnel who know local needs and thanked the presenters for their work.
No formal action was required; the presentation provided context to Council about regional pandemic response efforts and local collaboration during COVID-19.
