Henderson council orders demolitions, grants 60-day extension for one property

The Henderson City Council voted July 12 on multiple property actions tied to the city's Minimum Housing Code.
For 832 Champion Street, property representative Misael San Juan de Jesus asked for 45 days to make repairs because of pandemic-related material price increases and access problems. Council Member William Burnette moved, and Melissa Elliott seconded, a motion to grant a 60-day extension and require the owner to obtain a survey; the motion passed unanimously with Council Member Marion B. Williams absent.
The council approved Ordinance 21-21 to authorize the removal or demolition of 1022 Maple Street. Development Services Director Corey Williams told council the structure has been vacant since a March 2015 fire, contains asbestos, has no windows and "no value." Council approved the demolition ordinance unanimously (Williams absent).
Council also approved Ordinance 21-23 to authorize removal or demolition of 553 Spring Street. Williams said the building has been vacant for more than a decade and that heavy vegetation around the site could increase demolition costs. The ordinance was approved unanimously.
The clerk's minutes note the 832 Champion Street matter will be brought back to Council after the 60-day extension expires.
Next step: Staff will follow up on compliance inspections and bring status reports back to Council at the conclusion of the extension period or after demolition procurement as applicable.
