Nelson County approves K9 vehicle upfit, auto-start and five-year plan to add Axon dashcams

Nelson County commissioners approved several sheriff-office equipment purchases and a payment plan for vehicle camera equipment during their Feb. 6 meeting.
Sheriff Kurt Schwind and Chief Deputy Jesse Madche presented the department’s 2023 report and equipment quotes, including a $11,678.85 estimate to upfit a K9 into a patrol vehicle (recommended to be installed in a newer 2022 Explorer to maximize labor value). The commission approved the K9 upfit with that recommendation.
Commissioners also approved paying $449.00 to Sound Decision to install an auto start on the Sheriff’s F‑150.
The commission considered a quote from Axon for a dashcam system presented as a $14,687.92 cost spread over five years. After an initial request for more information, the board resumed discussion and approved the five‑year payment plan for the Axon camera system for a new sheriff patrol vehicle.
Commissioners also directed staff to address additional charges on the invoice for the new sheriff vehicle and seek removal of any unwarranted extra fees. All votes on these items were unanimous.
