Nelson County OKs highway hiring, $55,000 semi budget and KLJ design work; County Road 19 costs estimated at $1.29M

Nelson County commissioners on Feb. 6 authorized several highway-related actions, approving hiring steps, equipment spending and contracting for engineering design while receiving a planning-level cost estimate for a major road project.
Curt Loe, Nelson County Highway Superintendent, asked permission to fill a vacant full-time highway position; commissioners determined the position was already budgeted and unanimously moved to advertise for the vacancy. Commissioners also approved a budget up to $55,000 to purchase a replacement semi for trucks sold at auction.
The board appointed the Highway Superintendent as the Responsible Charge for all federal aid highway projects and voted to sign a Miscellaneous Services Agreement with KLJ, the engineering firm. Commissioners accepted KLJ's recommendation to perform design work on project BRJ-0032(019) (PCN 23985).
Paul Bjornson of KLJ presented a preliminary estimate of $1,287,369.24 to mill and gravel 5.19 miles of County Road 19. Bjornson’s figure is a planning-level cost; commissioners directed Highway staff to obtain culvert sizes and specifications from the Nelson County Water Board before taking further action on the County Road 19 alignment and culvert replacement.
The actions were approved by roll call votes with all members voting yes. The highway items will return for follow-up after staff collects the water-board specifications and KLJ proceeds with design work.
