Nelson County commissioners vote to close courthouse on July 5, sign regional law-enforcement agreement and table staffing decision

The Nelson County Commission on May 21, 2024 approved closing the county courthouse on Friday, July 5, and authorized signing a joint powers agreement with the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center, while tabling a staffing decision for the states attorney’s office pending financial figures from the county auditor.
Chairman Cody Johnson called the meeting to order. Commissioners Cameron Swenson and Steve Forde joined Johnson for roll call and then approved the minutes from the May 7 meeting and the amended agenda on unanimous votes after motions by Commissioner Swenson and seconded by Commissioner Forde.
Commissioners debated whether the courthouse should be open the Friday after Independence Day and then voted to close the courthouse on July 5. The motion was moved by Commissioner Steve Forde, seconded by Commissioner Cameron Swenson, and passed on a unanimous roll-call vote.
The commission discussed the staffing level for the states attorney’s office, including a proposal to move the states attorney assistant to a full-time position. States Attorney Jayme Tenneson and Assistant States Attorney Jack Yunker were present for that portion of the meeting. Commissioners tabled the staffing decision so Auditor Nathan Parks could prepare and present the necessary financial numbers.
Highway Superintendent Curt Loe joined to discuss Road & Bridge matters, and Paul Bjornson of engineering firm KLJ spoke about scheduling interviews; the commission set engineering interviews for Friday, May 24, at 8:30 a.m.
On a roll-call vote the commission approved signing the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center Joint Powers Agreement. The board also reviewed a letter from the Nelson County Water Resource District related to reversing a complaint from the county highway department and voted to sign that letter. Both motions passed unanimously.
Sheriff Kurt Schwind joined later in the meeting to provide an update on sheriff’s office business. The commission subsequently approved the presented bills on a unanimous roll-call vote.
With no further business, Commissioners Swenson and Forde moved and seconded adjournment, which carried unanimously. The minutes were signed by Nathan Parks, Nelson County auditor, and Cody Johnson, chairman.
