Burke County approves $3 million broadband budget amendment and several procurement items including vehicle procurement flexibility

Burke County commissioners approved multiple budget and procurement items on Aug. 13, 2024, including a $3,000,000 budget amendment tied to Board of Education broadband revenue and several other routine awards and amendments.
Commissioner R. Tommy Nix moved and Commissioner Evans Martin seconded approval of a $3,000,000 budget amendment for the Board of Education’s broadband revenue; the motion passed unanimously. The Board also approved a $1,000 budget amendment to accept a Walmart community event-supplies grant for the Sheriff’s Office and approved internal service fund cost allocations for July 2024 that included $105,857.78 for Vehicle Maintenance and $84,460.05 for Facilities Maintenance.
On procurement, the Board awarded the paint contract for road striping to Ozark Materials (total $41,524.00) and a culvert-pipe contract to Cherokee Culvert ($66,188.30), both approved unanimously on motions from Commissioner R. Tommy Nix. The Board also approved a DPR Architects proposal to design a shooting range with fees not to exceed $30,500; Manager Waldrop said funding was available.
Separately, the Board voted 4–1 to allow the Burke County Sheriff’s Office to purchase patrol and administrative vehicles using state-contract pricing in emergency or replacement situations; Commissioner Q. U. “Art” Lively opposed and requested that the Sheriff’s Office utilize the county maintenance shop where possible to offset costs.
What happens next: staff will record the budget amendments in county accounts and proceed with vendor contracting and design work as authorized. The Sheriff’s Office may proceed with expedited vehicle procurement under the parameters approved by the Board.
