King and Queen supervisors approve FY2022 budget amendments for fire truck, school track and ARPA funds

At its Jan. 10 meeting the King and Queen County Board of Supervisors approved three FY2022 budget amendments.
The first amendment authorized $570,000 for the purchase of a new fire truck for the Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire Department. The appropriation is tied to the county's purchase of the EMS station in Shacklefords and includes $70,000 for equipment that the county will own; the Board approved the appropriation on a motion by Supervisor J. M. Burns, seconded by Supervisor S. C. Alsop.
The Board also approved a $460,000 appropriation from the school capital projects fund for restoration and additional facilities at Central High School's track; the CHS principal provided an overview and the Board discussed the risk of cost overruns related to unknown existing conditions prior to approving the appropriation. Mr. Burns moved and Ms. Alsop seconded the motion, which passed with four ayes and one absence.
Finally, the Board recorded receipt of the county's first allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA/CSLFRF) funds, $682,262. County Administrator Thomas Swartzwelder noted the Board has not selected specific uses and therefore does not yet need to appropriate the funds for expenditure; the Board nonetheless amended the FY2022 budget for the amount received and recorded it on the books.
