Committee to consider inventory of artifacts found in Oneida County courthouse crawl space

Steven Schreier, County Board Supervisor, told the committee during public comment that while in the Clerk’s Office he had seen artifacts brought up from the courthouse basement and that some documents were legible; he said he believed more items might remain in the crawl space. Kerry Bloedorn offered to enter the crawl space to take an inventory.
Troy Huber, Buildings & Grounds, raised safety concerns and said he preferred county staff conduct any removal or inventory rather than allowing outside individuals into the crawl space. Vice-chairman Billy Fried suggested adding the issue to a future agenda to develop a plan and recommended obtaining approval from Corporation Counsel before proceeding.
The committee placed the matter on the next meeting agenda and directed staff to develop options and seek legal guidance. No formal action to remove or transfer artifacts was taken at the Feb. 2 meeting.
