County explores leaving Pamunkey system as it plans a county-run library; shared-services cost could be about $95,000

County Administrator Vivian Seay told the Board on June 12 that, after meetings with Pamunkey library staff and administrators from neighboring localities, there may be an option allowing King and Queen County to close the St. Stephens Church branch yet remain a member of the Pamunkey library system. Under that arrangement, residents would retain access to the West Point and Upper King William branches while the county transitions to a county-run library.
Seay said remaining a member would require the county to pay its portion of shared services, which she estimated at approximately $95,000. She emphasized no final decision has been made and that the estimate is preliminary. If the county leaves the system, the funds saved by leaving could be used toward establishing the county-run library, she said.
The Board did not take a vote on the library matter at the meeting; staff will continue discussions with Pamunkey system members and report back to the Board before any final action.
