VDOT outlines county road work; emergency Rt. 628 bridge replacement could take up to 18 months

Lee McKnight of the Virginia Department of Transportation briefed the King and Queen County Board of Supervisors on June 12 on multiple road and maintenance projects across the county.

McKnight said Holmestown Road is nearly complete and that work on Rt. 621 (Bruington Road) is expected to begin within a week. He reported an emergency closure at a bridge on Rt. 628 (Spring Cottage Road) is in the design phase and will require a full superstructure replacement; the project is expected to take up to 18 months.

McKnight also said rumble stripes have been installed at the Rt. 360 and Rt. 14 intersection at St. Stephens Church, mowing on primary roads has been completed, and asphalt patching is underway on Clancie Road, Walkerton Landing Road and Cherry Row Lane. VDOT crews have spread more than 1,000 tons of gravel on unpaved roads this season, he reported.

Board members raised local maintenance concerns after the update. Supervisor R. F. Bailey, Jr. asked that rumble stripes on Buena Vista Road be redone; Supervisor S. C. Alsop reported persistent potholes at the Roundabout Route and Rt. 721 intersection and on Indian Neck Road; Supervisor D. H. Morris asked that 'No Parking' signs be restored at Little Plymouth (Rt. 14 and Rt. 614) because trucks are parking on the roadside again.

VDOT’s schedule for the Rt. 628 superstructure replacement and the plan for temporary traffic management will determine access impacts during the estimated 18-month project.
