At its Sept. 2 meeting the Cusseta–Chattahoochee County Commission voted unanimously to recommend a proposed millage rate of 9.504 mills, an increase of 1.25 mills over the prior rate of 8.254.
County Manager Thomas Weaver explained the estimated homeowner impact presented at the meeting: a homestead property with a fair market value of $100,000 would see an estimated increase of about $50 per year; a $50,000 homestead would see about a $25 per year increase. Commissioners made the recommendation (not a final adoption) and approved dates for public hearings that same day.
At a Sept. 22 work session County Manager Weaver said an advertising error required the county to reschedule the public hearings; the hearings were rescheduled to Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. to comply with Department of Revenue notice requirements. The commission had originally planned hearings for Sept. 17 and Sept. 24 but said the paper advertisement failed to meet timing standards.
The commission emphasized that the Sept. 2 vote was a recommendation to set proposed rates and public hearing dates; a final vote to adopt the millage rate will occur following the public hearing process at the date specified by the board (the Sept. 2 minutes record notes a called meeting would follow a hearing previously scheduled for Sept. 24; the later work session updated the schedule to October dates). The commission recorded the recommendation by formal motion and unanimous vote.
Next steps: the county will publish corrected legal notices and hold the public hearings; a final adoption vote will follow the hearing schedule and any formally advertised called meeting.
