Pertussis tops Marquette County communicable disease reports; DOJ billboards, school reunification work underway

Public Health Nurse Sarah Jensen told the Board of Health that Marquette County recorded 414 communicable-disease reports this year, 255 of which required follow-up by a nurse; Pertussis (whooping cough) was the most-reported condition.
Jensen said chlamydia cases rose from 14 in 2024 to 21 in 2025 and that reproductive-health visits have increased over last year. As part of a DOJ-funded outreach project, the department has installed two billboards—one along I-39 and another on Highway 23—has prepared a newspaper article that should be published shortly, and has shared social media posts to reach residents.
Jensen also described the 'Ask a Nurse' school outreach, where department nurses set up educational tables to engage students on topics including suicide prevention, bullying and tobacco use. She noted that Montello and Westfield Schools are coordinating with the sheriff's department to develop a unified student-reunification plan for emergency response across the two districts.
The board received these updates as informational reports; no new regulatory actions or funding requests were made during the meeting.
