Residents urge action on homelessness and local maintenance during public comment

Several attendees used the Feb. 13 public comment period to press the council on homelessness and neighborhood maintenance.

Pastor Janice Hargrove, Whitney Gulley, Nicole West and Cheryl Brodie spoke about homelessness needs in the Henderson community and urged attention to shelter capacity and coordination of services. Mayor Eddie Ellington summarized a recent homelessness meeting attended by city officials and community leaders, noting questions about the Lifeline board's functioning, an outdated website complicating information access, and uncertainty about how any future funding would be allocated. Reverend Weir and his wife reported on a shelter project they are completing.

Separately, Mr. Eleizer Acevedo and a Ms. Acevedo raised neighborhood public-works issues including clogged drains, trash, railroad track concerns, and filled garbage cans left in front of homes. The minutes record the comments but do not indicate specific council actions in response during the meeting. City Manager Edward T. Blackmon noted the city’s interest in addressing homelessness and the need to enter data into the Homelessness Management Information System (HMIS) to establish priority for funding.

The council did not take formal action on these public comments at the Feb. 13 meeting.
