Fulton County commissioners reaffirm public defender’s salary as 40-hour position

Fulton County’s Board of Commissioners on Feb. 17 reaffirmed that the county’s public defender position will reflect a 40-hour workweek effective Jan. 1, 2026, after meeting with Public Defender Phil Harper and Administrative Assistant Cheryl Deshong.
Commissioner Hervey P. Hann made the motion to reaffirm the salary as a 40-hour position; the motion passed with all commissioners present voting in favor. The meeting record shows the board met with Harper and Deshong to review office matters related to hours worked in conjunction with the Indigent Defense Grant.
Earlier in the meeting Commissioner Steven L. Wible moved to approve the Feb. 10, 2026 commissioners’ minutes. Commissioner Hann moved to approve payroll dated Feb. 20, 2026 in the amount of $126,643.71. Commissioner Hann also moved to approve accounts payable dated Feb. 17, 2026 totaling $115,002.69; the accounts-payable motion included a fund breakdown listed in the agenda. All of those motions were recorded as passing with unanimous support from the commissioners present.
The accounts-payable breakdown in the meeting record lists Fund 100 (General Fund) $87,536.62; Fund 201 (Liquid Fuels) $3,847.31; Fund 227 (SFC Technology Grant) $374.72; Fund 231 (SFC Evidence Based Practice) $30.30; Fund 235 (Law Library) $3,327.00; Fund 238 (911) $13,246.68; Fund 240 (Hazmat) $46.03; and Fund 400 (Debt Service) $6,594.03, for a total of $115,002.69.
The board also recorded two executive-session entries in the morning—one for personnel matters and one for legal matters—but did not disclose details in the public minutes. The meeting adjourned at 11:22 a.m.
