Miramar ratifies $265,000 Broward County grant to reduce amphitheater noise; city to provide $530,000 match

The City Commission on Jan. 21 ratified the city manager's acceptance of a FY2026 Broward County Cultural and Artistic Facilities Capital Support Grant of up to $265,000 to fund sound abatement at the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater. Grant manager Allison Adams said the award requires a 2:1 match, resulting in a minimum city contribution of $530,000 to complete the project.

Construction Services representative Daryl Johnson described the initial scope as an encasing of the stage with sound panels on the sides, back and top of the stage, plus panels projected outward and a perimeter barrier around seating to limit sound escaping the amphitheater. He said the recommendation was based on a prior sound study that measured loudest decibel levels and recommended these mitigations.

Johnson told the commission the project would go to bid immediately upon commission approval, with a solicitation period of about 30 days and target work in the spring.

Commissioner Edwards asked if the scope would both contain outbound noise and improve internal sound quality; the team said it would do both, initially focusing on containment and then addressing internal acoustics. Vice Mayor Colburn asked how staff would verify reductions; Johnson said a follow‑up sound study would be performed after implementation.

The commission approved the grant ratification unanimously.
