Edmond approves $1.2 million budget amendment to repair surge in waterline leaks

The Edmond City Council voted unanimously to approve a $1,200,000 supplemental appropriation to the Public Works field services waterline maintenance budget after staff described an increase in water main leaks.
Keith Stewart, the city’s director of public works, told council the amendment covers three line items associated with leak repairs. He said the city is seeing historically high numbers of leaks over the past three years and reported there were 83 active leaks as of the prior Friday. "Our goal is to get down around 50 active leaks at any one time," Stewart said, adding that the average time to repair had improved from near 60 days a year ago to generally the 30–50 day range.
Council members thanked public works staff for quicker response times and for deploying contractors to help lower lead times. There was no public comment on the item, and the motion to approve passed 4‑0.
The appropriation moves funds from the EPWA water fund reserves into the field services waterline maintenance budget to cover emergency repairs and shortfalls. Council noted staff will continue to prioritize highest‑risk leaks and report progress to the council and public.
