During the Dec. 12 public comment period, several residents and service providers urged the Henderson City Council to take stronger action on homelessness and related housing insecurity.
Pastor Janice Hargrove, director of Lifeline (a local homeless shelter), described gaps in available housing for families and said children in shelters face stigma and bullying. Other speakers, including Cheryl Brodie and Shurondia Williams, described lack of recovery beds, landlords failing to make property repairs, eviction and application-fee barriers that impede access to housing. Several speakers asked the city to make vacant or city-owned properties available for renovation into shelters or recovery housing.
Council members acknowledged the problem, discussed past efforts and partnerships and indicated interest in connecting community organizers with ministers and potential funding sources. Council Member Marion B. Williams offered to put Pastor Hargrove in touch with a minister working on a shelter project; Council Member Jason A. Spriggs and others said council alignment on funding could advance projects.
The council did not adopt a formal directive or allocate funding at the meeting; speakers requested concrete commitments and faster action to address the immediate need for beds, shelter space and tenant protections.
