The Town of Canton’s Mayor and Board of Aldermen/women took several routine administrative actions at their Aug. 5 meeting.
Chief Sluder reported the highest bid for the surplus police fleet was $78,500 and said proceeds would be used toward purchasing a new fleet. Alderwoman Mull moved to approve the sale and Alderman Shepard seconded; the board voted in favor and the motion passed.
Finance Officer Walker presented the cash report and led a set of manager items: after discussing pros and cons the board decided to allow only certified service dogs at the Labor Day Festival in Sorrells Park for this year. The board also reached a consensus to close the town pool on Labor Day Monday due to expected low attendance. On the Labor Day Parade Grand Marshal, Alderman Hamlett suggested town employees; Walker noted many employees will be working the festival and said she would ask employees about having families ride the float or scheduling a marshal for another event.
Bethel Middle School requested an ad donation for its yearbook. Alderman Shepard moved to approve the request and Alderman Hamlett seconded, but the motion "was not approved." The board members instead chose to donate privately so that a single 1/8-page ad would run, the transcript records, for a total of $40.00 donated by board members out of pocket.
Alderwoman Mull moved to approve a budget amendment for the Fire Department; Alderman Hamlett seconded and the motion passed. The board later entered a closed session pursuant to N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(4) at 6:30 p.m. and returned to open session at 8:09 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
No public hearing outcomes or dollar amounts beyond the police fleet bid and the $40 personal donation were recorded in the meeting minutes presented at the meeting.
