Canton board conditionally backs Haywood County Community Change Grant after presentation revised

The Town of Canton Board on Oct. 10 voted to support the Haywood County Community Change Grant after asking the Tourist Development Association to revise its public presentation in light of recent flood recovery needs.
TDA Executive Director Corrina Rufflieux presented the Community Change Grants program, joined telephonically by Hanni Muerdter. Alderman Ralph Hamlett said the original presentation "would make the Board looked tone deaf" given ongoing recovery from Hurricane Helene and asked for changes to how the project would be presented to the public.
After discussion, Alderman Hamlett moved and Alderwoman Mull seconded a Resolution of Support conditioned on changing the presentation. The board voted unanimously to approve the resolution with that requirement.
The board’s action directs the town manager to coordinate with the TDA on updated presentation materials before wider public outreach. No funding commitment from the town was recorded as part of the resolution; the board approved only a resolution of support contingent on the presentation changes.
