Audit: Canton finances sound but FEMA reimbursements and storm costs remain a concern

An independent audit presented Dec. 12 found the Town of Canton’s financial reports to be in good order and in compliance with federal requirements, but the auditor warned of outstanding FEMA reimbursement issues and looming storm-related costs.
Auditor Shelia Gahagan told the board she “did not find anything that was not in compliance with federal law,” but she expressed concern about FEMA reimbursements for expenses tied to the temporary town hall and police department following recent disasters. Gahagan said those delays were not the town’s fault and that more work remains to close out recovery projects.
Gahagan also noted the town has received $600,000 in donations to support recovery efforts. Mayor Smathers and Assistant Manager Walker were thanked for their oversight of town finances; Walker received specific praise from the auditor.
Gahagan cautioned that additional costs related to the mill closure and Tropical Storm Fred are forthcoming and will require continued attention in budgeting and FEMA closeout work. The board heard the audit and expressed appreciation for staff work but did not take formal action beyond acceptance of the report.
