Buchanan County supervisors approve pay increases for county attorney’s office staff and finance deputy

Under Resolution 26‑16 the board authorized the County Auditor to issue paychecks raising Pam Albert, Legal Secretary in the County Attorney’s Office, to $27.24 per hour and Elizabeth Bean, Legal Assistant/Court Debt Recovery Specialist, to $26.74 per hour, effective March 1, 2026. The motion to approve the payroll authorization was made by Supervisor John Kurtz and seconded by Supervisor Keith Wieland and was recorded as carried “All in favor.”
The board also approved Resolution 26‑17 authorizing pay for Anne Iversen, Finance Deputy in the County Auditor’s Office, at $33.17 per hour, effective Feb. 27, 2026; that motion was also approved without recorded opposition.
Kris Wilgenbusch, County Auditor, told the board that because the County Attorney is an elected official the board does not appoint that office’s employees and that the Auditor must be authorized to issue the payroll. Wilgenbusch said the County Attorney’s office has budget capacity for the increases and that the raises apply to employees who “have been working for the county for quite some time,” not new hires.
Supervisor Keith Wieland questioned whether the county was overstaffed and whether pay increases were an appropriate way to manage staffing, saying, “I felt the county is overstaffed and this would be an easy way to reduce county staff.” Wilgenbusch responded that these were longstanding employees and the increases were budgeted; Wieland later said he had misunderstood.
In the same sequence of business the board also placed several manure management plans on file for HST LLC (Hazleton Township, Section 35), Wulfekuhle Site (Newton Township, Section 24), Slattery Brothers Farm #2 (Middlefield Township, Section 28) and Schuman Site (Newton Township, Section 7).
The board’s actions on payroll authorizations were administrative approvals enabling the County Auditor to process pay; no additional policy changes were made at the meeting.
