County pledges conditional funding for Lake Tobiason restoration; Fish and Wildlife land sale approved

Steele County agreed to provide $31,600 toward a Lake Tobiason water-quality project if an additional $10,000 in local funding is secured, and approved sale of a quarter section of land to North Dakota Fish and Wildlife in Golden Lake Township.
Representatives of the Steele County Water Resource District told the commission Aug. 7 that the Lake Tobiason project is intended to improve the lake’s water quality and that additional local matching funds would strengthen grant applications.
The board approved county funding of $31,600 on the condition the water district raises an additional $10,000, including township participation, to support another grant application (motion by Commissioner Randy Richards, seconded by Commissioner Richard Strand; unanimous).
Separately, Kurt Tompkins of North Dakota Fish and Wildlife sought approval for the agency to purchase a quarter section of land from Pauline Wolf in Section 10 of Golden Lake Township. Commissioners approved the sale (motion by Commissioner Russell Walcker, seconded by Commissioner Richard Strand).
The water district also discussed pursuing a North Dakota Outdoor Heritage Fund grant with evidence of stronger local funding support. The county’s conditional funding is intended to help secure that outside grant funding and to demonstrate local commitment to the project.
