During its Nov. 6, 2018 meeting Steele County commissioners approved a series of administrative items including contracts, abatements and budget transfers.
Auditor Emily Wigen updated the board on courthouse electrical work and instructed staff to seek an alternate vendor after the current contractor proved unavailable. The board discussed restrictions on use of the chairman's signature stamp and received annual workforce safety training sign-offs.
A motion approved setting election poll worker pay at $15 per hour. The commission also approved eight abatements filed by Bruce Neva on behalf of Tax Director Ben Gates after Neva paid taxes in 2017 due to an office error. The board authorized a five‑year license and software contract with Vanguard Appraisals (payable in 2019) and a two‑year GIS maintenance contract with Sidwell for April 1, 2019–March 31, 2021.
Tax Director Ben Gates was authorized to apply for several grants the board reviewed; Gates asked for a new Microsoft Surface but the purchase was deferred because of budget constraints. The board asked Gates to provide additional budget information when appropriate.
The commission reviewed November 2018 tax sale prices with no objections, approved the 2018–19 policy manual, and discussed applicants for the open Public Health Nurse position. The board approved transferring $296,470.47 from the Highway Tax Distribution account to the County Road and Bridge account to cover road needs.
Auditor Wigen will invite Bobbi Hepper‑Olson to the December meeting to present comparable bathroom remodel projects and vendor references for the courthouse remodel discussion.
