Steele County keeps commissioner portfolios, appoints Richards chair for 2019 and approves ambulance contract and abatements

At its Dec. 4 meeting the Steele County Commission left commissioner portfolios unchanged and appointed Commissioner Randy Richards to serve as chairman for 2019.
The motion to keep portfolios the same and appoint Richards as chair was moved by Commissioner Russell Walcker and seconded by Commissioner Ted Johnson; all members voted yes. The board also approved and signed the 2019 contract with West Traill Ambulance after a motion by Commissioner Richards and a second by Commissioner Johnson, and it approved eight abatements following a motion by Commissioner Strand and a second by Commissioner Johnson.
States Attorney Stock requested that he and his assistant be placed on the county payroll beginning in January 2019; the minutes record the request but do not show a separate motion or vote to implement the payroll change on Dec. 4. Sheriff Wayne Beckman informed the board that purchasing tasers and a new phone would put him over budget; the minutes note the equipment request and budget concern but do not record an over-budget approval.
Auditor Emily Wigen provided administrative updates covering the 2017 audit, planned courthouse chimney removal, 2018 mill levies, delayed bills and negative leave balances. The board moved to approve the bills as presented and adjourned at 1:50 p.m.
Next steps: States Attorney payroll placement, any over-budget equipment purchases for the sheriff, and routine accounting items will be handled per normal county procedures and future board action as needed.
