Henderson to apply for federal bulletproof vest grant to replace aging vests

The Henderson City Council unanimously approved a resolution on June 12 to submit a Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) bulletproof-vest grant application for FY 2023.
City Manager Edward T. Blackmon said the police department requested the grant to cover 50 percent of the cost of ballistic armor, a cost already included in the police budget. Police Chief Marcus Barrow told council the department is currently short about ten vests and that vests must be replaced after five years. Chief Barrow said if an officer transfers before five years and a size match exists, another officer could use the armor.
Councilmember Ola Thorpe-Cooper moved approval of Resolution 23-20 and Councilmember Jason A. Spriggs seconded; the motion carried unanimously. The city is also pursuing assistance from the North Carolina League of Municipalities to cover the additional 50 percent of costs.
