Henderson Council unanimously adopts Ramadan recognition after public comments

Mayor Melissa Elliott and the Henderson City Council adopted Resolution 24-23, “Embracing Diversity, Recognizing Ramadan, and Fostering Unity,” during their March 11 virtual meeting.
Attorney Safwan Ali urged the council to support three principles — representation, recognition and Ramadan — noting the faith’s global reach and the significance of the month for Henderson’s Muslim residents. Residents Abdulrah Saleh, Pasem Hauter and Renkeish Hammond also spoke during the public-comment period about Ramadan’s religious practices and personal significance, thanking the council for the opportunity to be recognized.
Mayor Melissa Elliott told the council the resolution is intended as a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion action, not a promotion of religion, and emphasized respect for all citizens. Councilmember Michael Venable moved approval; Councilmember Sara Coffey seconded the motion, and the council approved the resolution unanimously.
The resolution was presented and approved without amendment. The council record notes that the item was placed under New Business (CAF 24-32, Resolution 24-23). The vote does not create policy beyond the resolution's recognition and the council did not attach operational directives to the measure.
The council then proceeded to other items on the agenda, including rules revisions and budget scheduling.
